Remember: HOAs are evil

To quote Mike Myers: "E-ville. As in froo-its of the deh-ville."

Seriously. Do NOT get involved with control freak organizations, particularly ones that can charge you money and take your house. Run, do not walk.

Except for some of the newer HOA's in the panhandle, most of the Richardson HOA's are voluntary neighborhood associations, with no binding covenants.

Agreed; I volunteer with my local, non-evil Neighborhood Association.

Ditto. We call ours a "Civic Association". Optional to join and we can't file suit to evict an elderly neighbor for not mowing.

Voluntary or not, HOA'a are the few trying to control the masses with lifestyle guidelines that are impossible to enforce. They are also pipelines of the propaganda and reasonable people volunteer to be informed of the misinformation.

In other words, YOU are the only one who knows what is in YOUR best interest, not someone YOU do not even know.

Damn, I must be a rube... I didn't realize my neighborhood association was subliminally trying to control me. I guess that block party we had, and the Easter egg hunt, were really nefarious attempts at mind control. I better insulate my house from the propaganda, lest I be assimilated by the HOA Borg. Thanks for the heads up!

@Anon1120pm:

I will assume you are responding to Anon1251's comment since the blog article and both links were about HOAs not NAs.

@Anon1251pm:

I have not seen much evidence that NAs are out to enforce lifestyle guidelines; that kind of enforcement (if any) is a role of city code enforcement.

Now I *have* seen NAs try to influence the city and _vice versa_, and I am not sure that either case was for the larger good of the neighborhood. Perhaps this is what you mean by pipelines of the propaganda.

I agree that the individual homeowner needs to steward his/her own relationship to the community and look out for his own self interest. It is counterproductive to cede that responsibility to any other entity.

I suggest, however, that a collection of informed, self-interested homeowners can bind together loosely through a NA to overall positive effect.

I thought you could only join a "civic associations" if you were a gay neighbor.

I am quite happy!

We use the term "Civic Association" to be inclusive. We don't want to exclude "renters". Maybe we should be a "civic union"?
